Interactive activity
Film-watching is the most popular cultural activity in the UK, and films are part of our lives. Although films are often watched for entertainment, our AHRC-funded project ‘Beyond the Multiplex’ (hereafter ‘Project’) has shown how they shape people’s senses of self, cultural awareness, in their intergenerational relationships, and as part of their personal development. The webinar structure will be: (1) to introduce the Project and explain the meanings people ascribe to film (2) show four film clips. (3) then discuss research participants’ responses to those films, providing examples of people using film to make sense of identity, sexuality, ethnicity, technology, other places and cultures, as well as illness, exclusion and isolation. Attendees will be invited to participate in workshops (using the same platform in a continuous session) sharing their own experiences of watching the film clips, and what each meant for them. Each workshop will close with a summary argument that people develop and learn through film in ways that are personal to them.
