Exhibition/demonstration
We are surrounded more and more today by numbers, graphs, data and other quantitative information. Do we have the skills to make sense of all this?
This event will highlight the benefits of a new applied post-16 mathematics qualification, Core Maths, to individual students and to society more broadly. By presenting the sort of context-rich activities covered by Core Maths, and demonstrating the approaches advocated for teaching it, we will illustrate its relevance to young people, as they move through school or college and then into higher education or employment, as well as in life more generally.
It will explain the purpose of these new qualifications, and why they were felt to be needed, by the government and a wide range of stakeholders. It will outline the findings of our recently completed research project, which has followed teachers and students who have experience of Core Maths in their schools and colleges. We are able to highlight, using teachers’ and students’ own words, the benefits of the course.
