About this event

How can parents support bilingual and multilingual children to develop their language skills during the Covid-19 pandemic? How do bilingual and multilingual families adjust their family language learning policy and practice to sustain or expand learning opportunities? What resources and options are available at home and in the communities? These are the main questions this event aims to explore. Hosted by the MOSAIC Group for Research in Multilingualism, School of Education, University of Birmingham, the event will bring together a panel of speakers who will share their experience in promoting the learning of around minoritised languages especially Asian and African languages in the UK. It is open to parents, grandparents, teachers, educators, researchers and anyone interested in supporting heritage language learning and multilingualism.

The panel for this event includes: Dr Fatma Said (College of Education, UAF, Arabic language), Ms Sahra Abdullahi (UCL, Somali languages), Dr Lavanya Sankaran (King's College, London, Tamil language), Ms Amy Thompson (Manager of a Mandarin/English bilingual nursery) and Ms Gbemisola Isimi (Founder/Director, CultureTree, an organisation promoting African languages).

There will be opportunities for the audience to particpate in Open Discussion with the experts and share their experience and views with other parents and professionals.
