About this event

Recent research by the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) and the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE) highlights a need for greater policy and legislative focus to protect women who become homeless, especially when separated from their children. This event will discuss these important and often misunderstood issues and aim to generate more debate amongst policy and practice communities.

Our research found that women’s capacity to prevent family separation and rebuild a family home is hampered by the policies and procedures encountered in housing and social work systems; and these systems sometimes reinforce family separation. Central to these issues is the interaction between housing services and children’s social care, where conflicting aims and interventions can lead to women who are homeless falling between the cracks. Our research highlights the need for timely provision of safe housing for mother and child and more effective preventative services to prevent homelessness and enable mother and child to remain together. The research team at CRESR has worked with a range of academic, policy and practice leaders to make practical policy recommendations.

The research team will discuss their findings and policy recommendations. In addition, we will be joined by speakers from organisations that support women and families navigating these complex systems.

The event is open to all, and we warmly welcome those who work with women and families encountering multiple disadvantages to join us for this discussion. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and share good practice.
