About this event

Protest songs come from a tradition that emphasises strong repetitive messages which can become emblematic of a social cause and in structure can be songs that people can quickly learn and join in the singing.  Join Durham’s Sociology Department Showcase of songs written with the help of research groups and students by resident protest song-writer, Nicky Rushton.  Covering research topics of violence and abuse, communities and social justice, health and social theory, higher education and social exclusion, all are aimed at promoting social justice and making a difference in the real world. This event will showcase the songs, with Nicky writing several singing parts and recording a backing track for up to two songs which will be sent out to those interested in taking part. Singers will be invited to film of themselves recording the songs and send them in to be compiled into a film. A Q&A at the event will allow participants to contribute to the project with feedback and discussion about the work and songs.
